Whether you’re just starting at a firm or are reevaluating the services your practice offers, you’ll need to consider how you’ll handle consultations.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a super clear answer. Some firms offer completely free consultations, others require a fee.

Which is right for you? Here are some things to consider.

Should Law Firms Offer a Free Consultation vs Paid Consultation?

There are several ways you can look at this. If you are a brand new or small practice with few clients and a need for immediate exposure and client reviews, you may wish to dangle a free consultation as a marketing hook.

However

You can expect to get a lot of people looking for 30 minutes’ worth of free legal advice. If you do offer a free consultation, always make sure to limit the time that you spend with a prospective client.

You may also want to set a consultation fee at a competitive price, such as $200 for the hour. This way, even if you do not ultimately hook the client, you will at least have been decently paid for the time that you invested to spend with them. This is an especially smart option if you already have an established clientele.
